AL 'Concerned' On Libya AIDS Sentence

The Arab League (AL) on Saturday voiced concern on the developments regarding the death sentences in Libya to Six persons convicted of infecting Libyan children with the HIV/AIDS virus//. AL also issued an appeal to Tripoli and Sofia not to politicize the trial.

The AL also expressed full sympathy underlining the need to be compassionate to the HIV-infected Libyan children in order to curb the consequences of this "painful human catastrophe".

The Libyan Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced to death the five Bulgarian nurses and one Palestinian doctor who allegedly spread HIV/AIDS in 1999 to more than 400 children and mothers in a hospital in Benghazi, Libya's second largest city.

The five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor were jailed on accusations they have intentionally infected 426 Libyan children with HIV in a Benghazi hospital eight years ago.

However, EU has repeatedly expressed serious reservations about the basis on which they were prosecuted and tried, their treatment in prison, and delays to the legal process. EU also has urged the Libyan authorities to ensure a fair trial.
