AIIMS Creates Record by Completing 100 Four-arm Robotic Surgeries

New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Friday become the first hospital in Asia to complete 100 surgeries// through the most advanced four-arm robot - Da Vinci S.

"We were the first to acquire Da Vinci S robot in July last year and today we completed the 100th operations through the state-of the art machine. It's a record in Asia," said Ashok K. Hemal, a senior professor at the department.

"On Friday, we conducted two difficult prostate cancer surgeries on two senior citizens and achieved this feat," Hemal told IANS over telephone from his operation theatre.

He said the new robot helps them to conduct surgeries without any blood loss.

"Generally prostate cancers need three to four units of blood but by using this technique we have managed to achieve much precision and success. It has increased the comfort level of the doctors and further minimised the chance of technical and human error," he added.

"It can perform cancer surgeries with better accuracy and of blockages in the kidney and other surgeries without much difficulty. So far, we have carried out six operations with 100 percent success," said Hemal, a leading urologist in India and abroad.

The machine was imported from the US for Rs.90 million. But AIIMS has so far not charged a user fee from the patients.

The new robot is a master slave system in which the surgeon, sitting in the console, and his controlled movements are transmitted through the robotic arms to perform the surgical procedure accurately.

The robot allows extreme surgical precision, thus minimising the incidence of postoperative pain and complications.
