Children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Syndrome (ADHD) may now to treated to a better// condition with the help of sensory interventions like applying deep pressure or putting them through strenuous exercise, etc.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects nearly 3 to 5 percent of children in pre-school and early school years. Children with ADHD are known to be impulsive, inattentive and hyperactive. Recent studies have pointed out genetics and neurobiological causes that lead to ADHD. The usual ways of treatment are through medications and behavioral therapies.

The sensory interventions use the three sensory inputs of tactile sensations, sensations of gravity and movements, and sensation of being aware of own body in space. The techniques used are brushing against the skin, with lightest or more pressure, moving on swings, or working out with the exercise ball. The techniques, which were fine tuned to the need of each child, have made the children be at ease and attend to classroom and family activities. The sensory interventions can cause the brain to be more adaptable to sensory inputs, says the researchers.

The researchers from Temple University had presented their findings at American Occupational Therapy Association meeting in California.
