A warning and wake up call: German cat infected with deadly bird flu strain.

As a whiff of strong air comes the news that a cat that was found dead in Northern Germany was the carrier of the bird flu strain capable of infecting humans.//

According to an institute specialising in veterinary diseases the strain of the H5N1 bird flu virus had the highly pathogenic Asian strain that can be transmitted to humans.

The institute in question is the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, which advises the government on animal diseases. And in a statement issued by it they said that the discovery was neither a surprise nor a reason to take additional measures to curb the disease, which was identified in wild birds on the Island of Ruegen last month. The logical explanation behind the death of the cat is that since the cat also found on Ruegen contracted the disease by eating infected birds.

German authorities ordered all domestic cats be kept indoors and dogs kept on a leash in zones hit by bird flu. This was the advance measure taken by it. The virus has been identified in five German states and three-kilometre cordons have been set up around the areas where diseased birds have been found.

Still, this caused panic among the people due to the fact that the disease could also be transmitted to humans and not only by poultry.
