A recent report has placed on record the inadequate resources provided by the government to help the hundreds of stroke victims in England. This sub-standard quality// of treatment has left many stroke victims invalid. According to NHS figures, nearly 500 deaths can be averted with timely treatment and quality care.

The MPs have expressed the urgent need to enable stroke victims with immediate brain scans, appropriate medication to dissolve the clots and care from specialist hospitals. Statistics show that only 22% of the patients are able to undergo a scan on the day of the stroke, while the rest waited two days or more to undergo a scan. It was also observed that about only about two-thirds of stroke victims actually availed treatment in a specialist stroke unit.

Edward Leigh, its Conservative chairman, said: "Until recently, stroke has been treated as going with the territory of growing old and has certainly not been given the same level of priority and resources as coronary heart disease and cancer. Much more can be done to prevent stroke and to save lives and reduce disability"
