A Spanish Woman Gets A Double Hand Transplant

A 47-year-old woman who lost her hands in a chemical explosion some 19 years ago had double hand transplant done on 30 November//. This is the first of its kind done in Spain, and worldwide first on a woman.

A surgery team from the Pedro Cavadas Foundation performed this ten- hour operation.

The leading surgeon Pedro Cavadas said the patient was recovering well and may be released from hospital next week and should get back full use of her hands within five to six months.

This bilateral hand transplant was carried out at the Hospital La Fe in Valencia.

Only two of the hand transplant operations carried out in the world have failed, in both cases because the patient stopped taking the medication prescribed by doctors. The recipient of the first operation, which took place in the United States 8 years ago is said to be doing pretty well.
