The National Family Health Survey 2005-06 has revealed the extent of spousal violence//, HIV rates in families, as well data on the injustice meted out to unmarried women. The survey spanned 29 states and was supported by a network f 30 organizations who were involved in accumulating data.

There was an evident improvement in certain categories. Fred Arnold, Vice-President, ORC Macro said, "Child marriage, for instance, declined drastically from the first to the third survey. It’s very rare, nationally." The percentage of married women who are subject to spousal violence ranged from 25 per cent in Punjab to 39 per cent in Orissa.

The data enabled by this survey established the need to relook at certain policies concerning violence to women.” The survey found that infant mortality, for instance, is higher among abused women, as are other juvenile problems, and those of families and women themselves," said Sunita Kishor, senior gender specialist, ORC Macro. Detailed statistics on HIV , gathered during the survey ,can be used to evaluate the manner with which the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) tackles the disease in the future.
