A Shot in the Arm for Cancer Enzyme Research

Sydney- In what is being termed as a breakthrough in cancer research,// scientists from the Children's Medical Research Institute have cracked the composition of the cancer enzyme, telomerase, a constant in more than 85% of all cancers. This finding could pave the way for the design of precise drugs to target telomerase.

This is not the first time that scientists have sought to study the enzyme telomerase, yet its chemical composition has always eluded scientists. With this finding, scientists are now sure that the enzyme contains only two proteins, contrary to earlier assumptions.

This discovery promises to accelerate cancer research. To quote the words of the Institute’s director, Roger Reddel, 'This discovery sharpens the focus and no doubt will speed up the process of delivering successful treatments. It's very exciting.'
