A.Q. Khan Undergoes Successful Surgery for Prostate Cancer

Pakistan's disgraced nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan Saturday underwent a successful prostate cancer operation at the Agha Khan Hospital here. //

Farhat Abbas, who led a team of doctors through the operation, expressed satisfaction over the operation, Geo TV reported.

The 66-year-old Khan, who pioneered Pakistan's nuclear programme, was shifted to Karachi for the surgery Wednesday - the first time he was moved out since his house arrest Jan 31, 2004 imposed by President Pervez Musharraf after allegations of his involvement in the transfer of nuclear technology.

His wife and a daughter accompanied him to Karachi from Islamabad. Stringent security measures have been put in place during his stay in the hospital.

Khan was diagnosed with adino carcinoma of the prostate. The board of doctors that was constituted in consultation with Khan and his family comprises leading specialists, many of whom had worked at the hospital at Khan Research Laboratory (KRL) that Khan founded for nuclear research and production.
