According to the researchers at the Edinburgh University anti cancer drugs should be aimed at preventing MDM2 from destroying p53 molecule. //MDM2 is a protein which destroys p53 due to a biochemical imbalance inside the cell.

p53 is the guardian protein and is the tumor suppressor protein. Hence the lead researcher Dr. Kathryn Ball said that anti cancer drugs should be targeted against the MDM2 protein. The study has also pointed out a number of protein fragments which has the ability to bind to the MDM2 protein and inhibit its activity as a cancer promoting catalyst.

This study is being sponsored by the Cancer Research UK. Prof. John Toy, medical director of this organization said that p53 plays a crucial role in conserving stability by preventing genome mutation. Hence he said that if the protein is allowed to perform its function without the interference of the MDM2 protein then this would prevent many types of cancer.
