A Compensation Deal is Better Late than Never!

Nearly 180 hemophiliacs contaminated with hepatitis C through blood transfusions of contaminated blood in the 1980s and early 90s may be in for some generous compensation// from the government in 30 days time. This compensation will be accompanied with a letter of apology from Helen Clark, the Health Minster during the time. The victims will get up to $63,000 each, and will receive a letter of apology.

The $44,000 compensation will be disbursed to those claimants who are able to prove that they were disadvantaged by the transfusions between February 1990 and July 1992. Nearly 700 people, including hemophiliacs, are thought to have been infected.

Haemophilia Foundation vice-president Deon York said "One of the most important things in this settlement is receiving the apology. For a lot of people who've lost loved ones due to hepatitis C through receiving bad blood, this is long overdue but it's still welcome nonetheless."
