National Cot Locator is a new system developed by UK Hospitals, which enables hospital workers to reach out to the critically ill and premature neonates on time. The// system aims to speed up the admission and treatment of the babies, hence helps in saving lives of many.

Previously in the case of an emergency calls had to be made to arrange for a cot, which delayed the treatment process. But with the help of this government funded computer based program developed by clinical and professional experts, information of availability of cots in around 40 intensive care neonatal units across England is just a click away.

Ivan Lewis, the health minister says,” On the occasions when a suitable cot is needed outside of the local network, a call to the National Neonatal Cot Locator will provide immediate up-to-date information about more distant options, making sure that these transfers can happen quickly, are effectively planned and can go as smoothly as possible."

Further he adds on,” This will make a real difference to families and professionals seeking to ensure that babies and parents get the best possible care in usually very challenging circumstances."

According to the statistics, around 17000 babies need neonatal intensive care. There is an increase in the number due to increasing rates of older mothers, further IVF increasing the chances of teenage mothers and multiple births.

The Chief Executive of the premature and sick baby charity Bliss, Andy Cole says,” Bliss welcomes this important strategic development." "We hope to see the cot locator have a significant impact across England on the crucial issues of available cots and transfers for babies in need of intensive care,” she added.
