A ‘Brave’ Toddler-The Youngest Organ Donr

Four generations of his family served in the Indian Army and battled the country’s enemies from across the border. His father being a Sena Medal winner// and with ‘Showrya’ meaning ‘brave’ for a name, it appeared that the baby boy was destined to tread the family path.

But a fall from the first floor balcony of his Secunderabad home on December 8, proved fatal for the one-and-a-half-year-old Showrya Malik, who was pronounced ‘brain dead’ the next day.

His family in a rare gesture donated the organs of the toddler, making him the youngest organ donor in the country.

The recipient was discovered through the Multi-Organ Harvesting Aid Network (MOHAN) Foundation. On 10th December, the little boy’s eyes went to the L V Prasad Eye Institute and his kidneys went on to benefit a 31-one year old man.

Dr S Sahariah, chief transplant neurologist at the city-based Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, where the transplant surgery was done said,” It was tricky. Showrya was probably the youngest donor of organs. In the limited time one has to harvest the organs, that is, to retrieve and transplant them. We found one recipient who, except for being an adult, was suited to receive the kidneys. Since it was from a child to a man, we transplanted both the kidneys".

Showrya’s kidneys were, however, fused. Doctors refer to it as a ‘horse shoe’ kidney. Dr Sahariah is very hopeful that the recipient will lead a healthy life, despite the fact that it takes a few days to fully understand how the recipient's body has welcomed the kidneys.

Dr Sahariah is all praise for Showrya’s family. "Medical miracles happen, but what the boy's parents did is unparalleled,” he eulogized.

Retired Colonel S S Malik, Showrya’s grandfather said, "My son has killed militants. He wanted his son to be a hero as well, and so decided to donate the organs. We assumed the organs will go to another child, but no matter, my gra ndson did save another life”.
