64-slice CT scanner is a new innovation to examine one’s heart.Usually an angiogram is performed where a thin flexible tube is threaded into an artery //in the groin or forearm and advanced through the arterial system into the heart, where x-ray images are taken.

This would take a few hours but for a patient to recuperate from this invasive procedure it would take four to six hours. But this new 64-slice CT scanner which is been installed at the Ascot Hospital need just 10 minutes to examine a patient’s heart. It is the most advanced technique of its kind in the world and cost about $1.5 million.

It gives a detailed picture of the heart facilitating the medical specialists to examine the organ as if they were actually inside the body. The machine takes multiple images of the heart, which is assembled into a three-dimensional picture at a higher resolution than the conventional scanners. The entire scanning procedure is now quick and painless. The machine shows the state of the arteries down to the finest detail, including the stents.

Ascot cardiologist Dr Andrew Maslowski was very excited and said that technology plays an important role and could potentially change how coronary disease can be treated in the near future. It offers better resolution thereby enabling the doctor to identify the heart problem at an early stage. The CT scanner is a less invasive alternative to the conventional angiogram. The principal radiologist at Ascot Radiology, Dr David Rogers, said that this technology holds tremendous potential in other areas such as orthopaedics.
