31 Villages In Romania Affected By Bird Flu

Health authorities in Romania have confirmed the presence of new H5N1 bird flu infection. Following detection of the bird flu infection in Ostrov // (near the Bulgarian border), 31 villages have been confirmed to be affected by bird flu.

Laboratory examination done on samples derived from poultry has been confirmed to be positive for bird flu infection. However, the samples would be further sent to the Capital for additional testing and confirmation.

The Romanian Government had confirmed bird flu infection in Vlahi village, near Constanta County. In addition, there was a growing suspicion about more bird flu cases near the Bulgarian border. Since detection of the bird flu strain in October last year, nearly 31 villages have been affected.

So far, no human-human transmission has been recorded so far. However, it is feared that mutation of the bird flu virus could lead to bird flu pandemic. In view of the above situation, it is high time that the Romanian health authorities take appropriate measures to curb the spread of the deadly bird flu virus.
