£4m Allocated To Tackle Suicide and Protect Lif

Health Minister Shaun Woodward announced that funds to the tune of £4m or more will be allocated to combat the rise of suicide cases in Ireland. This spending should take care of containing// the unhealthy trend, atleast for the next two years. The suicide rates have gone up by almost 50%.

A senior medical post will be instituted to exclusively cater to mental health problems with suicidal tendencies, according to Mr Woodward. To enable this initiative, the Northern Ireland Director for Mental Health would “act as a chief advocate for the improvement of the mental health of the Northern Ireland population".

Philip McTaggart, co-founder of the Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide said he was absolutely taken aback by the number of people who killed themselves during the previous year.

According to him, the reason was partly due to long waiting periods of youngsters to be seen by a counselor. Though he expressed positivism with the recent move, in his opinion, the recent effort is relatively minuscule compared to the prevalent suicide rates.
