“Binging is a Common Eating Disorder”, Says a Survy

According to a latest survey conducted in the United States, binge eating is more prevalent than anorexia and bulimia. This study reveals that 3.5 % binge eaters are// women while it is 2% in the men’s segment.

This study was conducted by James Hudson and Harrison Pope Jr. and their team at Harvard University and McLean Hospital. They say that binge eaters have absolutely no control on their massive food intake. Sometimes they may feel guilty but it does not help.

Bingeing has become more common than anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa which are again eating disorders. Uniform psychological pattern and reasoning were observed among the binge eaters. They all feel that they are not able to control their eating once food comes to their mind.

A lot of factors like the genes and the environment contribute to bingeing. Some people can strictly resist food temptation while few others cannot. While Bulimia and binging are closely associated disorders, the latter is sure to lead to obesity.

According to Pope and Hudson these conditions are completely treatable. The treatment includes a psychological one which deals with cognitive and behavioral practices. The other two therapies are through medications and corrective surgeries.
