‘Dirty’ and Dangerous Tools Put Full Stop to Operatin

A patient from Aberdeenshire, Scotland will have to go through ‘one of the most stressful things’ of his life, yet again//.

Alan Paterson who was suffering from an acoustic neuroma - a form of brain tumour in the inner ear- was all prepped and connected to monitors, before the 18-hour-long brain surgery was to begin.

It was then that doctors noticed three sets of non-sterile surgical instruments meant for use during operation. The team of 30 professionals as well as the patient had to return without the job completed.

Confirming that equipment in one tray and two back-up trays could not be used, as it was ‘marked’, NHS Grampian was reported to have apologized.

A statement issued by the health board said: "Clearly, surgery can't go ahead if there is the slightest possibility of a risk of infection to the patient."
