The Role of Mindfulness Meditation in Health Care Reform

of stress hormones, and improving brain function), it also improves health indirectly by helping individuals to avoid maladaptive responses to stress (e.g., excessive drinking, substance abuse, smoking, binge eating).

Evidence shows that Mindfulness Meditation can improve health and wellbeing by: ameliorating pain, decreasing stress and anxiety, alleviating depression, diminishing the use of medications, facilitating medical decision making, supporting healthy lifestyle changes, enhancing social connections, strengthening immune system function.

Arguing that a wide-scale adoption of Mindfulness programs throughout the health care system would decrease costs by keeping people well and facilitating the healing process when they do get sick, the authors conclude that, "Mindfulness training will help people become more self-aware, more resilient to stress, and more responsible about their lifestyle choices."
