Texas Institute for Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas Introduces the First Wireless OR in DFW
Date:6/17/2009

Surgeons at the Texas Institute for Surgery at PHD are the first to perform surgeries in the area's first wireless group of operating rooms.

DALLAS, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Institute for Surgery at PHD today announced a partnership with Stryker Endoscopy to upgrade seven of its existing operating rooms in addition to an observation room and a boardroom with Stryker's latest HD technology and wireless video monitors. Stryker Endoscopy's WiSe(TM) Wireless HDTV's are embedded with a wireless HD technology, granted exclusively to Stryker, by AMIMON Inc.

This technology allows for greater surgeon flexibility in positioning the surgical monitors during procedures, decreased operating room clutter and less downtime due to cable breakage. Better visualization for remote instruction and real-time observation will also be possible with wireless transmission images from the operating rooms to the observation and board rooms.

Being the first to bring wireless HD transmission to the DFW area, both TIS hospital leaders and Stryker anticipate more operating rooms to follow the new trend in wireless HD monitor systems.

"If the surgeon can see better, surgical times may decrease, along with decreasing hospital stays and rehabilitation periods," said Steven Thornton, M.D., a TIS orthopedic surgeon. "We now have the ability to transmit images and audio from the ground floor operating room monitor to a second floor boardroom and beyond without cables."

Advancement in medical electronics usually follows the consumer industry, (i.e. HD technology), TIS President Debbie Hay, RN, BSN, CASC said. "However, in this case, the medical imaging technology advancement is ahead of the consumer market. Just imagine having the freedom to move your home television around the way you do your laptop computer."
