Dr. Stern received her MD in 1990, the same year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) passed. She helped pave the way for medical professionals who would follow in her footsteps, benefitting from the accessibility for which she fought. As Dr. Stern continued through medical school, residency training, and then again after graduation, it became clear that she would need to become a trailblazer for communication access as well. She led the fight for accessible continuing medical education, ongoing classes doctors are required to pass to keep their licenses current.

In addition to her tireless advocacy efforts, Dr. Stern is also the CEO and co-founder of DeafDoc.org, a website that covers health care issues using American Sign Language (ASL) as well as captions. Dr. Stern recollects: "On my first day as a medical student, I was one of about 150 in my class, and our instructor told us 'maybe half of you will graduate' and I told myself that I would be part of that half. I am grateful to be recognized for my contributions in the medical field and as a member of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Community."
