Middle-Aged Senior Care Advocate to Move Into D.C. Retirement Community
Date:8/11/2009

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- To gain an insider's perspective on senior living communities, 43-year-old Steve Gurney, the founder and publisher of the Guide to Retirement Living SourceBook, will become a temporary resident of The Residences of Thomas Circle, a downtown Washington, D.C. retirement community. Gurney is documenting his experiences and insights on his blog www.everyoneisaging.com.

During the last 20 years, Gurney has immersed himself in the business of aging and senior care helping thousands of families make decisions on senior housing options. On August 19, Gurney and his 6-year old son will move into The Residences of Thomas Circle, a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), where they will spend a week living as residents. Gurney feels senior communities can benefit by integrating individuals that do not fit the traditional resident age and health status.

"By separating older individuals into their own communities, we're saying that these residents are different than the rest of us," says Gurney. "But we are all aging, not just those with AARP cards."

Gurney selected The Residences of Thomas Circle for its "unique, urban location." He explains that most retirement communities are in suburban environments. "Living in an urban setting, you can easily walk to a bookstore or nearby restaurant. This type of environment allows for greater freedom and independence," says Gurney.

"The Residences have always promoted intergenerational opportunities and we are delighted to welcome Steve into our community," says Elliot Roth, executive director of The Residences at Thomas Circle. "Like o
