mHealth Alliance Works in Partnership with GSMA to Expand Discussion of Mobile Health at 2010 Mobile World Congress

Dedicated Conference Track to Explore Market Opportunities Around mHealth

Washington, DC (Vocus) February 11, 2010 -- The mHealth Alliance today announced that it and the GSM Association will deliver a day-long conference program on the use of wireless networks to support health delivery (mHealth) at the 2010 GSMA Mobile World Congress. A series of high-level presentations and seminar panels under the banner “mHealth – Collaborating for Universal Care: An mHealth Insight Developed with the mHealth Alliance” will take place on Thursday, February 18, 2010, exploring the rapidly growing ecosystem at the intersection of the healthcare and mobile worlds.

“mHealth is a new frontier for the mobile industry and we are excited to be working with the mHealth Alliance to establish a dialogue around the opportunities and challenges for participants across the entire healthcare value chain,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer at the GSMA. “This dedicated day-long track on mHealth at the Mobile World Congress should be particularly insightful. We expect it to lead to new ideas, new conversations, and ultimately, new ways of doing business.”
“One year after the launch of the mHealth Alliance at the February 2009 Mobile World Congress, we are thrilled to be back at the Congress and partnering with the GSM Association to expand discussion of how wireless can help reach global health goals,” said David Aylward, Executive Director of the mHealth Alliance. “The marriage of health with wireless is a win-win opportunity for the mobile industry, for health providers, and for everyone who cares about creating healthier communities,” he added.

The day will begin with opening remarks from Terry Kramer, Regional President, Vodafone Americas and Dr. Ajay Bakshi, Associate Principal, McKinsey, and followed by a series of high-level plenary panels and afternoon seminar discussions. Sessions and moderators include:

 
  • “Supply Side Ecosystem and the mHealth Value Chain”, moderated by Dr. Sally Stansfield, Executive Secretary of the Health Metrics Network of the World Health Organization
  • “Revenue Streams for mHealth - Exploring the Future Economics of mHealth”, moderated by David Aylward, Executive Director, mHealth Alliance
  • “Wellness at Every Age”, moderated by Dr. Hector Gallardo Rincon, Director of Operational Solutions, Instituto Carlos Slim de la Salud (Carlos Slim International Health Institute)
Representatives of major wireless operators, and health and strategy companies will also participate, including: Accenture, Apollo Hospitals, Ericsson, i.e. healthcare, LG, Orange, Safaricom, Smart and Telefonica. Experts from the Columbia University’s Earth Institute, the Massachusetts Institute for Technology, Sproxil, Terem Emergency Medical Centers, University of California at Los Angeles, Vital Wave Consulting and WellDoc also will speak.

The mHealth Alliance was announced by the United Nations Foundation, Vodafone Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation at the February 2009 Mobile World Congress, and builds off those Foundations investments in innovative technologies in its support global health goals.
