KGI to Host Public Discussion on Personalize...( CLAREMONT Calif. Sept. 8 ...),Health

CLAREMONT, Calif., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Keck Graduate Institute will host a public workshop on the impact that personalized medicine will have on life science companies, physicians, patients, and others on October 19, 2009.

"Personalized medicine will change how medicine is delivered," said Diana Bartlett, KGI's director of corporate partnerships, who organized the event. "It's no longer one size fits all. Your therapy may be different from mine, even though we have the same disease, because of differences in genetic makeup, lifestyle, health history and other factors."

Bartlett added that the workshop in October is a new part of KGI's long-standing effort to reach out to the life science industry and showcase the educational expertise that the institute has to offer.

Historically, patients with common conditions and diseases were treated with the same one-size-fits-all diagnostics and therapies. However, recent developments in molecular profiling technologies such as genomic testing have made it possible for physicians to tailor medical care to an individual's needs.

Personalized medicine will have a dramatic impact on how biotechnology leaders are prepared for the industry of the future. It will influence everything from research and development through commercialization and operations.

It also will be a key element that links life science industries, such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices, with the health-care delivery sector, says Bartlett.

A distinguished panel of professors, physicians and other health care professionals will discuss the issues from 6 to 8 p.m. on the KGI campus.
