JBFCS, Payless ShoeSource Partner to Give Shoes to New York City's Needy Kids

Raising a Child's Spirits in a Tough Economy

NEW YORK, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today JBFCS and Payless ShoeSource partner to provide free shoes to children. Called the "Payless Shoes 4 Kids Program," this grassroots effort is designed to reach school-age children during the holidays. Payless ShoeSource has given two-hundred $15.00 gift coupons to JBFCS for distribution to the children they serve at their Hawthorne Cedar Knolls residential treatment center in Westchester County. Most of these children come from New York City. Each coupon is redeemable for, or toward, a pair of children's shoes at any Payless shoe store.

JBFCS' Hawthorne Cedar Knolls fosters an environment of caring and learning for the youngsters who reside on the campus. Its services address their experiences of abandonment and traumatic stress. Many of these children have histories of social, behavioral and school-related challenges. The children work on developing independent living skills that will serve them successfully once they leave Hawthorne.

A Step In The Right Direction

Financial hardship among New York City Families is at its highest point in years. Job loss has given parents less money for essentials such as clothing and even something as simple as shoes. While the whole family feels the strain of this situation, it is the children that suffer the most. They are vulnerable to the teasing of their friends at school, and they find it hard to feel good about themselves.
