idcloak’s Socks Proxy List frees Skype from government blocks
Date:5/27/2013

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) May 27, 2013

As part of its effort to promote open access on the web, idcloak Technologies releases a SOCKS proxy list. Netizens may use proxies from the list to access Skype when the service is blocked in their country. Access to Skype in these countries has until now largely relied on VPNs, which either charge subscription costs or, if offering free VPN software, employ advertising to generate revenue. idcloak’s free proxy list differs in that it is a not-for-profit service: each SOCKS server is provided by the public for the public and is free of both costs and advertising.

idcloak’s censorship circumvention specialist, Gill-Chris Welles, is vocal about the importance of the release: “32 countries around the world currently block access to Skype at some level or another. In most cases, Skype communications are inhibited so that the local government can secure a monopoly for domestic telecommunications companies. In others, it’s about political control. But as long as there is internet access in that country, our proxy list will allow its netizens to reach Skype’s servers without the need for third-party software.”

The list includes filter parameters that allow a user to search by country, speed and port number. Skype natively supports SOCKS proxy usage, so a user need only copy the selected IP address and port number and paste it into the Skype’s settings. Once done, all Skype communication will tunnel through that remote proxy and connect with Skype’s servers from outside the limits of the country’s web filters.
When asked why idcloak Technologies appear to be serving Microsoft’s interests on this occasion, Welles was to the point, “We are serving the interests of the people; if that coincides with the interests of a corporation, good for them.”

idcloak Technologies is a Dallas internet services company concerned with the promotion of freedom, security and privacy on the web. For further information on the company’s work, visit http://www.idcloak.com
