Although obesity is associated with an increased risk for several malignant tumors, the association between obesity and esophageal adenocarcinoma, a type of esophageal cancer, is stronger than that for other obesity-related tumors. As reported on Cancer.gov, last reviewed in January 2012, overweight and obese people are almost twice as likely as those of normal and healthy weight to develop this deadly disease. Although the relationship between obesity and esophageal cancer is not well understood, it is now thought that those who are overweight or obese have a higher incidence of Barrett Esophagus and gastroesophageal reflux disease, both of which are linked to an increased risk for developing esophageal cancer. Those that choose to lose weight will reduce the risk for developing esophageal cancer, as well as a multitude of other types of cancer tumors.
