Obesity is the gateway for countless health issues, but can also wreak havoc on confidence and self image. A very obvious sign of carrying extra weight is the development of striae, or stretch marks on the skin. When body weight increases, the skin must expand to make room for this additional volume. During the process of expanding, the connective fibers in the coatings of the skin can deteriorate or even rip leaving groups of blemished tissue commonly referred to as stretch marks.

Normally forming as pink, red or purple strips or stripes of compressed skin, these groups of staining are typically most noticeable on the stomach, breasts, upper arms and thighs. The marks will normally lighten in appearance, taking on a silver or white color, but will most likely never disappear completely. Because of the embarrassment associated with unsightly stretch marks, many refrain from taking advantage of revealing and more comfortable summer clothing. There are several creams and treatments making empty promises to make stretch marks disappear, but nothing has been discovered that will totally eliminate stretch marks. Because there is no proven treatment to remove these marks, the most sensible solution is to avoid their development by maintaining a healthy weight.
