ZocDoc Joins the Fight Against Cancer

Encourages Prevention Through Screenings

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 11, 2009 -- What better time than February, National Cancer Prevention Month, to remind New Yorkers that their health is in their own hands? ZocDoc, the service that helps consumers find and book doctor appointments online, announced today that they have added 40% more cancer screening appointment times this month. Now more than ever, New Yorkers are able to make appointments online and stop cancer in its tracks.

Cancer screenings should be done by a number of different specialists, including (but not limited to):

  • ENT specialists, who can provide head and neck cancer screenings
  • Dermatologists, who can provide skin cancer screenings
  • Gynecologists, who can provide breast, ovarian, and cervical cancer screenings
  • Gastroenterologists, who can provide colon cancer screenings
In 2005 (the most recent year for which data is available), nearly 35,000 NYC patients were diagnosed with cancer. Of those, more than 22,000 people survived - over 60 percent. While these numbers are promising, ZocDoc contends cancer fatalities can be prevented further. Along with the obvious lifestyle choices of exercising, avoiding tobacco, sun safety, and maintaining a healthy diet, early screenings are vital in preventing cancer.

"With 65,000 available appointments in February, our goal is to help as many people as possible find a doctor. New York City counts cancer as its second biggest killer, and getting a regular screening is essential for early detection," said ZocDoc Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer, Oliver Kharraz, MD. "If every New Yorker had a cancer screening, think of the lives we could save."
