Young investigators recognized for research excellence at Sao Paolo meeting

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has presented prestigious awards to five young researchers from Argentina and Brazil in recognition of their outstanding work.

The IOF Sergio Ragi-Eis Young Investigator Awards, named in memory of the late Brazilian clinician and researcher, were awarded to the highest scored abstracts by researchers under the age of 40. The Awards were presented at the IOF Regionals 1st Latin America Osteoporosis Meeting, which was held from May 24 to 27 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in So Paulo.

The winning investigators and the topic of the research presentations are:

  • Diogo Domiciano, Brazil: Discriminating sarcopenia in community dwelling older women with high frequency of overweight/obesity: Prevalence and associated risk factors. The So Paulo ageing & health study (SPAH)
  • Linda Denise Fernandes Moreira Pfrimer, Brazil: High intensity aquatic exercises improve bone mineral density, body balance and muscle strength in postmenopausal women
  • Nville de Oliveira Ferreira, Brazil: Prevalence of vertebral fractures and quality of life in a sample of postmenopausal Brazilian women with osteoporosis
  • Jaqueline Barros Lopes, Brazil : The impact of asymptomatic vertebral fractures on quality of life in community dwelling older women: So Paulo ageing & health study (SPAH)
  • Mara Beln Zanchetta, Argentina: Evaluacin de la microarquitectura sea en mujeres con fracturas atpicas del fmur y tratamiento crnico con bifosfonatos

All abstracts from the meeting have been published in the journals Osteoporosis International and Archives of Osteoporosis (Springer Publishers).

The International Osteoporosis Foundation is committed to promoting bone research in all regions of the world and offers the IOF Young Investigator Awards annually at its Regional Meetings held in the Asia-Pacific, Latin America,and the Middle-East & Africa.
