Date:11/12/2009

It is estimated that legal counsel already represents over 3,500 women and countless others are still in need of help, unaware of their rights, if Yaz, the most popular birth control pill in the United States, affected them adversely. The Onder Law Firm will provide a free case review to women or the families of women who have suffered from serious health problems after taking Yaz.

St. Louis, MO (Vocus) November 12, 2009 -- The number of Yaz lawsuits continues to increase as women suffering from health problems ranging from gallbladder disease to stroke and heart attack come forward and seek legal representation. In some cases it is the families of women having died. The brief history of the best selling birth control pill in the United States contains multiple FDA warning letters, advertising retractions for minimizing risk and overstating benefits and a requirement to have all advertising through 2015 approved by the FDA. Yaz is manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

The FDA and Attorneys General of 27 states required Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to correct deceptive advertising, which minimized serious health risks to users and overstated the symptoms for which the drug was approved to treat.    This prompted the company to launch a $20 million ad campaign to correct those misstatements and omissions. The 2009 Warning Letter was not the first the makers of Yaz received from the FDA, additional communications were sent in 2008 and even date back as far as 2003. The 2008 FDA Yaz Warning Letter to Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. regarding Yaz advertising specifically cited the company’s failure to disclose serious health risks. The letter states “there are numerous warnings associated with the use of Yaz including, but not limited to, venous and arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events (such as myocardial infarction, thromboembolism, stroke), hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, and hypertension. Moreover, Yaz has additional risks because it contains the progestin, drospirenone. Drospirenone has antimineralocorticoid properties which can lead to hyperkalemia in high risk patients, which may result in potentially serious heart and health problems. Women taking Yaz must be concerned about the drug interactions that could increase potassium, in addition to the drug interactions common to all combination oral contraceptives.” Hyperkalemia is a medical condition where the blood has abnormally elevated levels of potassium. Severe hyperkalemia can cause blood clots, resulting in problems such as stroke, heat attack (myocardial infarction) or deep vein thrombosis. These are the health problems that have been most commonly cited in currently filed Yaz lawsuits.

The Onder Law Firm wants women who have used or are using Yaz or Yasmin to be aware of the side effects and hazards. The firm’s Yaz safety information web site contains information regarding Yaz side effects and rights women suffering from them may have. The attorneys of The Onder Law Firm will review will provide free case review to women having experienced side effects or medical problems after taking Yaz. The Onder Law Firm provides experienced legal representation without fee unless it collects for its clients.
