We have to take steps to make sure fewer people suffer these injuries and, if they do, they must be able to get the medical care they need.”

TBIs are physically, emotionally and financially costly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that direct medical costs and indirect costs such as reduced productivity total $76.5 billion each year.

“Hospital stays, rehabilitation and follow-up care quickly add up to tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, taking a serious toll on victims of TBI and their families,” Morales said.
TBIs are most often caused by falls, which account for 35 percent of cases, according to BIAA. Car crashes account for 17 percent, workplace accidents 16 percent and assaults 10 percent, with other causes making up the other 21 percent.

“Many TBIs and the accidents that cause them are preventable,” Morales said. “Negligent acts such as car accidents are some of the most common causes of brain injuries. The people who cause these accidents should be held responsible for the injuries they cause.”

Morales urged victims of brain injuries caused by negligent acts to seek counsel from an experienced
