YWCA USA Celebrates Sojourner Truth Memorial in U.S. Capitol

WASHINGTON, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The YWCA USA co-sponsored another historic first this morning with the unveiling of a Memorial bust of Sojourner Truth in the United States Capitol. An outspoken abolitionist and suffragette, Truth is the first African American woman to be so honored.

"This day is long overdue, but we are thrilled to pay homage to and honor this courageous American hero," said Lorraine Cole, Ph.D., YWCA USA CEO. "Sojourner Truth was a trailblazer and fearless leader who inspired many African Americans and women to stand up for their rights, speak their minds, and work for justice and dignity for all people. She was an amazing woman and remains an inspiration to us all."

First Lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were among those who spoke at the Capitol ceremony this morning. Key Congressional supporters of the Memorial also included Reps. Sheila Jackson-Lee and Diane Watson, and Senator Arlen Specter. Reps. Cynthia McKinney and Major Owens, and Senators Carl Levin and Chris Dodd also supported earlier efforts to place a Sojourner Truth Memorial in the Capitol.

Other co-sponsors of the Memorial are: President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, the National Congress of Black Women, Ford Motor Company, Shell Oil Company, Wal-Mart, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Capitol City Links, National Organization for Women, and Events of the Heart.
