World Molecular Imaging Congress 2016: “Imaging Biology…Improving Therapy”
Date:2/10/2016

The 9th annual meeting of the World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS), known as the World Molecular Imaging Congress (WMIC), will be held in New York City, NY on September 7 – 10, 2016. The theme for the 2016 meeting is “Imaging Biology…Improving Therapy.” The congress will highlight and emphasize how imaging reveals a greater understanding of the biology of disease, refines and accelerates the development of effective therapies, improves guidance for efficacious therapy and allows more informative outcome decisions.

The WMIC will feature more than 170 oral presentations and more than 1,000 scientific poster presentations. The WMIC Scientific Program Committee is currently accepting abstract submissions in the following emphases: Probes and Targets, Preclinical Imaging, New Biology, and First-in-Human & Clinical Studies and in the categories of Neuroscience, Oncology, Cardiology, Inflammation & Infectious Disease and Metabolic Disease; Instrumentation, Computation & Omics; and Transdisciplinary Imaging. The deadline to submit abstracts is Wednesday, March 2, 2016. For more information about WMIC 2016, please visit http://www.wmis.org.

“The 2016 Program for the Congress in New York has been designed to push the envelope in both biology and medicine and bridge scientific disciplines. We aim to address the most compelling scientific questions and meet the most pressing unmet medical needs,” said Christopher Contag, Ph.D., Professor, Stanford University and President, WMIS 2016. “The program spans non-invasive imaging to in vivo microscopy, basic research to clinical studies, and academic research to the commercialization of our greatest innovations. We have put together a program for WMIC 2016 that embraces the foundations of molecular imaging including chemistry, biology, medicine and engineering, and yet pushes the limits of the field by reaching into those new areas of research that are changing paradigms in biology and medicine.”

The WMIS’s roots date back to the early 90s and has built a robust scientific and educational mission through mergers of several forward-thinking societies that were formed with the aim of expanding the Molecular Imaging footprint around the globe. From these early beginnings, the WMIS has become the only organization to focus on multimodality molecular imaging and have the greatest impact on basic science, preclinical and translational research.

“Our aim is to develop novel imaging tools that help us to better characterize and understand biology, pathogenesis and disease progression,” said Fabian Kiessling, M.D., Professor, University of Aachen, Germany, and Program Chair, WMIC 2016. “The resulting imaging methods will play an important role in linking basic research to clinical applications and will improve precision therapy.”

Highlights of the plenary sessions and key research to be presented at the World Molecular Imaging Congress, include:

Plenary Presentations:

  •     Craig Thompson, M.D., President of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Member of the National Academy of Sciences, will be delivering the opening plenary talk: Cancer Metabolism: Oncogenes Addicting Cells to Nutrients.
  •     Clare Tempany, M.D., Harvard University, will be delivering the plenary talk: MR-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (Prostate Cancer).
  •     Thomas Wang, M.D., Ph.D., University of Michigan, will be delivering the plenary talk: Molecular Endoscopy (Cancer Imaging).
  •     Karl Deisseroth, M.D., Ph.D., Stanford University, will be delivering the plenary talk: Optogenetics (Neurosciences).
  •     Tian Xu, Ph.D., Yale University, will be delivering the plenary talk: In Vivo Genome Screening with Imaging – Gene Finder (Neurosciences).
  •     Gitte Moos Knudsen, Professor, Chief Neurologist, DMSC, Copenhagen, will be delivering the plenary talk: Measuring Neurotransmitter Release.

  •     Manu Prakash, Ph.D., Stanford University, will be delivering the plenary talk: Curiosity and Physical Biology (Biomimicry & Point-of-Care Diagnostics).
  •     Larry Wald, Ph.D., Harvard University, will be delivering the plenary talk: Tools for Understanding the Brain.

ABOUT WORLD MOLECULAR IMAGING SOCIETY
The WMIS is dedicated to developing and promoting translational research through multimodality molecular imaging. The education and abstract-driven WMIC is the annual meeting of the WMIS and is held in conjunction with partner societies including the European Society for Molecular Imaging (ESMI) and the Federation of Asian Societies for Molecular Imaging (FASMI). WMIC provides a unique setting for scientists and clinicians with very diverse backgrounds to interact, present, and follow cutting-edge advances in the rapidly expanding field of molecular imaging that impacts nearly every biomedical discipline. Industry exhibits at the congress included corporations who have created the latest advances in preclinical and clinical imaging approaches and equipment, providing a complete molecular imaging educational technology showcase.
