World Health chair to deliver inaugural address at Penn's Positive Health Lecture Series

WHAT:

Sir Michael Marmot, chair of the World Health Organization Commission on Social Determinants of Health and director of the International Institute for Society and Health at University College London, will present the inaugural Positive Health Lecture Series talk, "Social Determinants of Health: Global Evidence and Action."

The Positive Health Lecture Series is organized by Martin Seligman, University of Pennsylvania professor and founder of the positive-psychology movement, and Penn's Positive Psychology Center and is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The project aims to improve health and quality of life by focusing on health strengths and low-cost interventions.

WHO:

Marmot has studied health inequalities for 30 years, investigating how socio-economic forces affect health and mortality. He leads the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and was a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution.

Marmot will discuss the commission's efforts to address health inequalities and to transform global- and national-policy debates to improve health. A major thrust of the commission is turning public health knowledge into political action.
