NEW YORK, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Woman's Day magazine's 5th Annual Red Dress Awards will kick off American Heart Month by honoring four women who have made significant contributions to the fight against heart disease, the number one killer of women today.
The Insider's Lara Spencer will emcee the event on Thursday, January 31st at the Stone Rose Lounge in New York City. Actress Allison Janney (West Wing, Juno) will receive a Red Heart Award for her efforts in raising heart health awareness. Six-time Grammy award-winner and heart disease survivor Toni Braxton will debut an exclusive Campbell's Red Dress designed by Lisa Perry in support of the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women campaign.

women will develop some form of the disease, yet many women of all ages are

The 2008 Woman's Day Red Dress Award recipients are:
-- Denise Austin: As a true fitness pioneer, Denise Austin has been
motivating women to get moving for more than 25 years. She has shown us
not only how to fit exercise into our lives, but how to make it fun. A
member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports,
Austin has starred in more than 70 workout videos and DVD's, and hosted
fitness programs on ESPN and Lifetime TV.
-- Wanda K. Jones, Dr. P.H.: As Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health in
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Director of the
Office on Women's Health, Wanda Jones is devoted to making sure gender
differences aren't overlooked- especially when it comes to heart
disease. Since the mid-1990's, she has worked with government leaders
to address heart disease in women, and she was instrumental in the
creation of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI)
Heart Truth campaign in 2002.
-- Fern Mallis: Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion, Fern Mallis, was key
in launching the Red Dress Collection Show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion
Week in New York- the signature event for the NHLBI's Heart Truth
campaign. She has been a passionate supporter of the show since its
inception 5 years ago, and has helped recruit renowned designed to
create red dresses for the celebrity models. The red dress is now
recognized as the universal symbol for women and heart disease.
-- Jennifer Mieres, M.D.: President-elect of the American Society for
Nuclear Cardiology and co-author of Heart Smart for Black Women and
Latinas, Jennifer Mieres is the lead investigator for the WOMEN study
of heart disease screening tests. An active member of the American
Heart Association and an Emmy Award-nominated producer for the PBS
documentary A Woman's Heart, she is also an associate professor at New
York University School of Medicine, as well as a member of Woman's
Day's heart-health advisory Board.
Honorees will be featured in the March 4 issue of Woman's Day, on newsstands February 12.
