The Telecom Expense Management Industry Association (TEMIA) recently published a white paper entitled “BYOD: Dos and Don’ts,” presenting research results and offering guidance for implementing Bring Your Own Device mobility programs in the enterprise.
“The findings presented in TEMIA’s white paper correlate with what we’ve observed among our client base,” said Wireless Analytics CEO Erik Eames, who is also an elected TEMIA board member. “For example, about half of all organizations adopting BYOD practices expect to save money versus providing corporate-owned mobile devices to employees. The expenses seem to disappear, but costs often resurface in the form of employee reimbursements, additional administrative costs, lost productivity when users have to manage their own devices, or additional IT security costs to lock down data on the devices.”
“On the other hand,” continued Eames, “enterprises can’t necessarily ignore BYOD. Employees are demanding it, and allowing employees to use a preferred device can have employee satisfaction benefits.” According to the white paper, TEMIA research found that 45% of survey respondents reported employee demand for BYOD to be the top reason the practice was implemented.
The paper also recommends engaging Human Resources, Legal, Risk and Compliance, as well as corporate telecom or IT departments, when planning and implementing BYOD. “Forgetting to factor in the danger posed by potential data breaches, plans for enforcement of device policies, and processes or systems for expense control can be an expensive mistake,” said Eames. “Whether you’re at risk for privacy breaches, incur new costs for corporate network security, or are suddenly reimbursing employees who incur a huge international roaming charge while traveling on business with their personal phone, BYOD can see costs related to corporate mobile telecom skyrocket when you don’t consider the whole picture.”
