White House National Conference on Mental Health Calls for National Dialogue to Reduce Stigma

The National Conference on Mental Health, hosted by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, is currently underway at the White House. At the invitation of the President, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association is in attendance and pleased to highlight the concept of recovery along with its importance in promoting mental health and fighting stigma. “The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is eager to add to this national dialogue and support the White House in reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness,” says APNA Executive Director Nicholas Croce Jr., MS, who is representing the association at the conference. “Psychiatric mental health nurses are uniquely situated to advocate for persons with mental health concerns and to provide a message of recovery and hope to those who consider seeking treatment.”

While millions of Americans struggle with mental health issues, those who need help are too often afraid to seek it because of the shame and secrecy associated with mental illness. This conference brings together people from across the country, including mental health advocates, educators, health care providers, faith leaders, and individuals who have struggled with mental health concerns, to discuss how we can all work together to reduce stigma, and help the millions of Americans struggling with mental health issues recognize the importance of reaching out for assistance. Concurrent with the conference, the White House has launched a website, mentalhealth.gov, which provides mental health resources and information for the general public.

Answering the President’s call to launch a national conversation to increase the understanding and awareness about mental health, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association launched an online resource section, http://www.apna.org/MentalHealth, which is devoted to providing accurate and recovery-focused information, tools, fact sheets, education and more on psychiatric-mental health. The section offers resources for providers, individuals, families, and communities. In addition, APNA will be working across a variety of communications channels to help facilitate discussions on mental health and recovery.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association applauds President Barack Obama and the White House for speaking out against mental health stigma and taking action to elevate the issue of mental health to a national level. “Seeking treatment…is a sign of strength,” said President Barack Obama during his address earlier today. APNA looks forward to continued participation in furthering this lifesaving message along with the broader goals of this effort.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a national professional membership organization committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders. APNA’s membership is inclusive of all psychiatric mental health registered nurses including associate degree, baccalaureate, advanced practice (comprised of clinical nurse specialists and psychiatric nurse practitioners), and nurse scientists and academicians (PhD). APNA serves as a resource for psychiatric mental health nurses to engage in networking, education, and the dissemination of research.
