Rapper and philanthropist Jay-Z is on the right track with his campaign to help people become involved with the global water crisis, reports water researcher Sharon Kleyne. While Kleyne has only high praise for the hip-hop star, she believes that his “Water for Life” campaign doesn’t go far enough and that too many people, including Jay-Z, remain uneducated about the full extent of the crisis. Kleyne’s ultimate objective is for very government on Earth to make water their #1 priority.
Sharon Kleyne is Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research, a water and health research and product development center. As part of part of her commitment to educating the public about all aspects of water, Kleyne hosts the globally syndicated Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show on VoiceAmerica and Apple iTunes.
Kleyne first learned of Jay-Z’s interest in the global water crisis while watching an interviewed with him on TV. She has never met Jay-Z but is excited about his work and noted the similarity between his “Water for Life” mission and her “Power of Water” mission.
Jay-Z cites some sobering statistics, says Kleyne. Of the earth’ s 7 billion people, 1.1 billion lack adequate drinking water, 2.6 billion lack water for sanitation and 2 million children die each year from water and sanitation causes. Jay-Z’s campaign, Kleyne observes, focuses on areas where the crisis is greatest and the people are poorest such as Africa, Central America and parts of South America, the Middle East and Asia, including China.
There is no question, says Kleyne, that Jay-Z is doing tremendous good. Building a village well in Kenya is extremely cost effective and can save and/or vastly improve thousands of lives.
To Kleyne, the crisis affects every single person in every country everywhere on Earth, including the United States. Water is the basis of all life, Kleyne explains, and no living organism can survive without water. As Earth’s human population explodes and the climate gradually becomes dryer, warmer and more polluted, places that never before experienced water shortages now face uncertain futures. Georgia and Alabama are now considered “drought states.” Colorado, the “Mother of Rivers”, is for the fires time experiencing its own water shortages and may soon have to restrict flow in the Arkansas, Platte and Colorado Rivers.
Kleyne quotes author Steven Solomon’s best selling 2010 book Water the Epic Struggle: “In the 21st Century, water will replace oil as the world’s most valuable commodity”. Solomon has been a guest on Kleyne’s Power of Water radio show. Worldwide, Kleyne notes, water access and infrastructure are the number one determinant of economic growth.
Kleyne believes that the water vapor/humidity in the air is threatened. The human body is 70% water and a fairly large percentage of the body’s daily water intake comes from the air’s invisible vapor. The air’s humidity is seriously threatened by drought and pollution. Changes in the air’s humidity have a significant but largely unstudied domino effect on the world’s climate.
Kleyne’s solution is for everyone in the world to be made aware of the crisis including governments. If the crisis does not now affect them personally, says Kleyne, it will soon.
A few ways to become involved: Support efforts such as Jay-Z’s “Water for Life”, Lifewater International or the Power of Water. Educate yourself on local and global water issues. Follow the subject on Twitter and Facebook, and in the news, and express your opinion. Urge politicians to give water issues the highest possible priority. Talk about the subject with friends. Join a study group, charitable group or activist group. Participate in Earth Day and World Water Day.
Kleyne would like to see many new water related programs, activist causes, inventions and ideas. She believes that this united approach represents the best hope for rising above the crisis and assuring the survival of life on our precious “Water Planet”. Working together, we can save the Earth and the “breath of life".
