Water Community Stresses Importance of Security During Drinking Water Week
Date:5/6/2010

As Drinking Water Week continues, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) joins water professionals across North America in encouraging everyone to play a role in keeping our water supplies and systems secure.

Denver, CO (Vocus) May 6, 2010 -- As Drinking Water Week continues, American Water Works Association (AWWA) joins water professionals across North America in encouraging everyone to play a role in keeping our water supplies and systems secure.

As everyday guardians of public health and safety, water and wastewater professionals are committed to measures that reduce risks from vandalism, terrorism and natural disasters, while protecting drinking water from the risk of contamination.

In this new era of security, water utilities are continually evaluating security measures and practices. They are investing in physical security, cyber-security and contaminant monitoring technologies. At the same time, utility emergency response planning has advanced significantly in recent years. This includes vulnerability assessments and emergency response plans required by the Public Health Protection and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002.

"It's important to remember that we all play a role in protecting our community water supplies and facilities," says AWWA President Craig Woolard. "If you see unusual activity nearby a water facility, a drinking water reservoir or at a fire hydrant, please don't hesitate to call the police and alert your water provider."

The water community will continue work on its security-related efforts, including the ongoing development of security standards and guidance, and the creation of water and wastewater agency response networks (WARNs). More information can be found at www.NationalWARN.org.
