Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart Specialists Hold CME Event: Top Advancements in the Treatment of Structural Heart Disease

One of the most experienced teams of heart specialists in the country will hold a Continuing Medical Education (CME) titled Top Advances in the Treatment of Structural Heart Disease.

The symposium, presented by Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart & Vascular Center physicians, is Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, 6:30-9 p.m., at the Omni Dallas Hotel in Dallas, Texas. The CME event is not part of the official Scientific Sessions 2013 as planned by the American Heart Association (AHA) committee on Scientific Sessions Program.

At the conclusion of the event, participants should be better able to:
-Recognize how patients with complex coronary artery disease are currently managed.
-Describe the concept of the heart valve team and the importance of patient selection for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
-Recognize the indications for TAVR.
-Realize the limitations of data currently available for percutaneous mitral valve clip therapy.
-Discuss prior and recent trials of device closures for patent foramen ovales (PFOs).

The symposium is chaired by Douglas Mann, MD cardiologist-in-chief at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and director of the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart & Vascular Center.

Ralph J. Damiano Jr., MD, chief of cardiac surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and John Lasala, MD, PhD, FACC, Washington University interventional cardiologist and director of the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish structural heart disease program, will moderate the symposium.

The diverse group of specialists includes the following Washington University physicians at Barnes-Jewish Hospital: Richard Bach, MD, cardiologist and director of the hospital’s cardiac intensive care unit; Phillip Cuculich, MD, electrophysiologist; Hersh Maniar, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon; and Alan Zajarias, MD, interventional cardiologist. The Heart & Vascular Center leaders are also joined by Peter C. Block, MD, FAHA, FACC, Emory University Hospital cardiologist.

Washington University designates this live activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits(TM). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Washington University is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
