Warning of Statin Drug Lipitor’s Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Came Too Late Say Patients Filing Lipitor Lawsuits

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 18, 2013

Some patients who have taken the statin drug Lipitor are reporting that they developed type 2 diabetes after taking the cholesterol-lowering drug despite having no known risk factors. High potency statin medications like Lipitor have been shown in some studies to increase a patient's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a finding that many Lipitor patients say should have prompted the manufacturer of Lipitor to sufficiently warn patients of the drug’s type 2 diabetes risk before they began taking Lipitor.("Risk of Incident Diabetes Among Patients Treated with Statins: Population Based Study," May, 23, 2013, (In Re: Lipitor Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, MDL Docket No. 2459, JPMDL)

Manufactured by Pfizer, Lipitor's side effects started to come into focus when patients who had little risk of developing type 2 diabetes began to report that they developed type 2 diabetes while taking the drug. Responding to the allegations and recent studies, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has started to require that manufacturers of statin drugs list the associated blood sugar level risk on their warning levels. However, many patients allegedly injured by the statin claim in the Lipitor lawsuits that this warning did not come soon enough. (FDA Expands Advice on Statins Risks, February 27, 2012,

“When a medical drug or device has an associated risk or side effect, patients need to know,” said Laura Baughman, attorney at Baron and Budd. “The fact that Pfizer may not have sufficiently warn their patients of the type 2 diabetes risk associated with their very popular drug, Lipitor, is troubling."
