Wake Forest Herbfest Sponsors America In Bloom Competition

Wake Forest, NC (PRWEB) April 02, 2013

Wake Forest in Bloom…Wake Forest, NC…historic downtown Arts & Entertainment district….April 19th through 21st , and 26th-28th 2013 at Festival Park 527 South White Street, Wake Forest, NC 27587

The Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Endowment is proud to present the 14th Annual Wake Forest HerbFest. This popular annual event has been offering attendees the greatest selection of herb plants and perennials in one place for the last fourteen years. This year’s event, a fundraiser for the Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Endowment, will help fund the community’s application to the “America in Bloom” program.

America in Bloom promotes nationwide beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. Founded in 2001, America in Bloom is modeled after proven, successful programs in Europe and Canada. The program offers a national awards program for cities and towns, and provides a framework for improving the overall quality of life. HerbFest founder Bob Johnson has formed a committee and already registered Wake Forest to participate in 2013. “Wake Forest In Bloom is a program to acknowledge the hard work, co-operation, and community pride the Town has in itself. America In Bloom is a reward program for communities that work and play together for the betterment of all.”

Student volunteers from Franklin Academy will be participating again this year with their own theme, “FA: Sowing Seeds in the Community.” Faculty advisor, Alison Edwards, is overseeing their efforts. “Our students have benefitted much from the GJCAE’s contributions to our Artists in the Schools program and they want to give back to the organization and the community by their participation in HerbFest again this year.” Students from Franklin Academy High School clubs will provide activities for children including face painting and entertainment for attendees with performances from the Theatre Arts program, the Jazz Band, and the African Drum Ensemble.

This year’s schedule will span two weekends in a row, which allows visitors time to make multiple trips as well as making allowance for poor weather. All the herb plants are certified organic, as are this year’s expanded selection of organic vegetable plants including tomatoes, squash and peppers. The HerbFest Duck Parade is featured daily and draws families to the event again and again. Herb plants are grown in the Circle of Life disposable pots that are made from rice hulls and so will naturally decompose over time and not add more plastic to the local landfill.

While closed during the weekdays between the weekend sales, founder Bob Johnson can be found out among the herbs on the weekday mornings to educate local elementary school students via scheduled field trips and hands on learning. Visits include a tasting of rosemary lemonade and learning how to make a natural flea repellent for the family dog. Johnson feels planting a garden is a great family experience and allows families to bond while also learning together about gardening, cooking, and proper nutrition.

Proceeds from the event support the Graham Johnson Cultural Arts Endowment which promotes arts and arts programming in schools and communities.
