Voxiva Works with Aetna to Deliver Personalized Diabetes Support to Delaware Physicians Care Members via Mobile Phone
Date:9/17/2013

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 17, 2013

Voxiva, Inc., a pioneer in interactive mobile health programs, announced today that members of Delaware Physicians Care, an Aetna Health Plan, are now able to enroll in the Care4life(SM) Diabetes program. Care4life Diabetes content was developed in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, and the program combines the best in diabetes education with time-tested evidence-based behavior change techniques. It uses text messages, a personal online web portal, and mobile website to engage and support people living with diabetes through their mobile phones.

Care4life Diabetes provides education, medication and appointment reminders, blood glucose tracking, weight/exercise goal setting and tracking, and a motivational virtual coach. Care4life also contains information from American Diabetes Association publications including healthy recipes, nutrition tips, and information on disease management. Along with increases in medication/appointment attendance and weight loss, program participants are more knowledgeable, confident and effective in managing their diabetes.

"We have been using mobile phones to try to help members improve their health since 2006. We highly value mobile health care tools, which is why Voxiva is such a perfect fit. We are proud to be the first Aetna Medicaid plan to implement the Care4life Diabetes program,” says Dr. Stanley Lynch, Chief Medical Officer, Delaware Physicians Care.

“Delaware Physicians Care understands the value of using mobile communications to connect with their members. Care4life supports their commitment to improved member health with an innovative and personalized approach for people with Type 2 diabetes,” says Voxiva CEO, Justin Sims.

The Care4life program has been shown to catalyze self-care behaviors, increase medication and appointment adherence, exercise and weight loss, improve diabetes-related quality measures (HEDIS).

Surveys of Care4life diabetes program participants show:

  •     82% said it helped them remember to take medications and attend doctors’ appointments
  •     87% reported improved knowledge of diabetes and how to manage their condition
  •     92% said it helped them set health goals and work toward achieving them
  •     97% would recommend Care4life to other people with diabetes

Clinical study results measuring the effectiveness of Care4life are expected to be published in the coming months.

Care4life’s text messages were developed by Theresa Garnero, APRN, BC-ADM, MSN, CDE, author of the American Diabetes Association book, Your First Year With Diabetes, and 2004 AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year. "It is the daily reinforcement of desired behavior that’s so unique about Care4Life," Garnero says. "Interactive text messaging, combined with an online log that is built one text message at a time, reinforces the guidance provided by the patient's educator and care team."

Developed by Voxiva, the diabetes program is part of the company's Care4life portfolio of text-message based health and wellness support programs, which include maternal and child health, adult health and smoking cessation.
