Voices Against Brain Cancer Commends Young Man for Raising Money for Brain Cancer Despite Fighting His Own Battle
Date:5/23/2013

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 23, 2013

On May 23, Voices Against Brain Cancer, an organization dedicated to brain cancer research and advocacy, commends Salem High School senior Max Merget for turning his graduation party into a fundraiser for brain cancer.

According to a Patch.com article, Max Merget has battled brain cancer four times. He was diagnosed with anaplastic ependymoma -- a large malignant tumor in the dominant, left side of brain, at the age of three. He underwent surgery but the tumor came back a year later when he was four and then again at the age of seven. Then, after a decade of being cancer free, doctors found a small pea-size tumor in Max's brain this past January.

He recently underwent surgery to remove the tumor and is now living his life like any other graduating high school senior. However, Max wanted to help those who have been fighting the same battle he has been for most of his life, so he turned his recent graduation party into a fundraiser for brain cancer research. The money will be donated to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Max told Patch.com, "It's not that I have to, it's that I want to. I know the research is going to be done right and I think it will make a difference. If it's buying a laptop with that money versus towards putting it towards research to help out the kids at Mott, then it's not even a question to me."

Michael Klipper, chairman of Voices Against Brain Cancer, an organization dedicated to brain cancer research and advocacy, commends Max on his positive attitude and willingness to help others. “It is so great to see a young man being positive and wanting to make a difference despite the tough hands he’s been dealt throughout the years. He serves as an inspiration to all and we wish him the best of luck as he continues his studies at the college level.”

VABC has a wide variety of initiatives in place for brain cancer research, awareness and support. The organization’s research grants fund cutting-edge research programs that will have a monumental impact on the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer. VABC currently funds research at several esteemed institutions such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cleveland Clinic, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, John Hopkins, Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Yale, to name a few.

VABC's mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.
