Voalte White Paper Explores 5 Steps to HIPAA-Compliant Text Messaging

Sarasota, Fla (PRWEB) November 06, 2013

Voalte, the leader in clinical communication technology, today released its latest white paper, “5 Steps to HIPAA-Compliant Texting,” which explores best practices for sending secure text messages in a hospital setting.

The white paper discusses the implications of mobile accessibility in the healthcare industry and the need to maintain patient privacy as hospitals implement mobile technologies such as smartphones. The report also addresses the Health Insurance Portability and Accountable Act (HIPAA) Security Rule, which establishes national standards for the confidentiality of electronic protected health information (ePHI).

According to the white paper, the following five best practices can ensure the confidentiality of ePHI:
1.    Encrypt sent, received and stored data to prevent non-authorized users from accessing private information.
2.    Require a user ID and password to log in to mobile devices.
3.    Manage smartphones remotely with mobile device management software to retain control even if a smartphone is lost.
4.    Lock and securely store smartphones when they are not in use.
5.    Perform a thorough risk analysis and develop an appropriate strategy that promotes HIPAA compliance.

With the increasing presence of smartphones in a hospital environment, the white paper also suggests that a robust security policy developed by the IT department is necessary to keep ePHI secure and meet HIPAA requirements.
