Vision By SightMD Doctors Focuses On Raising Funds and Awareness of ALS Disease During Upcoming Walk
Date:9/15/2017

The doctors and staff of SightMD - and key members of their co-managing optometric partners – will continue their efforts to raise funding and awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) on Long Island – by participating in the annual ALS Walk on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Eisenhower Park in Nassau County, according to noted eye surgeon Jeffrey L. Martin, MD, chief executive officer of SightMD.

“ALS is a cause that has, unfortunately, become very near and dear to many of us in the eye care community since one of our eye doctors was diagnosed with ALS,” said Dr. Martin. “Three years ago, Dr. Frank Verdone was running in multiple half marathons, enjoying skiing with his family and leading an active lifestyle,” Dr. Martin said. “Today, he walks with a cane and even the most simple activity causes him great discomfort. It just goes to show you how quickly our lives can be changed by diseases like ALS.”

This is the third year the staff and doctors of SightMD have participated in the annual ALS Walk. Last year, their participation resulted in being named the #1 team in the walk with the most participants. This year, they expect an even larger turnout because of their optometric co-managing partners who also plan to attend the Fall ALS Walk on Saturday, September 16. “As we’ve seen the previous two years, this event is an excellent opportunity for us to get together outside of our work environment to enjoy time with our families, friends and coworkers with doing whatever we can to help in the fight against ALS,” said Dr. Martin.

ALS - also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease - is a progressive disorder of part of the nervous system that controls voluntary movement. ALS typically causes the muscles in the body to become progressively weaker, resulting in eventual paralysis and death. “In the last 75 years, there has been very little progress in a cure or even a treatment for this fatal disease,” said Dr. Martin. “We hope that even our minor efforts in events like the annual ALS Walk can help make a major impact on a treatment for this devastating disease,” said Dr. Martin.

Dr. Martin expects the majority of the doctors and staff of SightMD to participate in this Saturday’s Fall ALS walk and he hopes many of Long Island’s optometric physicians do so as well. “We are committed to helping raise awareness of ALS and look forward to having a fun and successful walk this Saturday,” he said. “We have even reached out to some of our patients, so we expect a large turnout in Eisenhower Park this weekend.”
