Virtua Commends Gov. Corzine's Charity Care Funding Plan

Proposed 2010 state budget maintains charity care spending level

MARLTON, N.J., March 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Richard P. Miller, President and CEO of Virtua Health, praised New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, Health and Senior Services Commissioner Heather Howard and the administration for placing a high priority on the health care needs of the state's residents in the proposed budget that was unveiled today in Trenton.

In the state fiscal year 2010 spending plan, charity care funding would remain at the same level as this year. The charity care program helps to cover hospital expenses of persons without health insurance and who meet certain income guidelines. The budget must be passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor by July 1.

"This is very good news in an extraordinarily challenging budget year," said Miller. "The administration recognizes that health care is a priority, especially at a time when statewide charity care costs -- along with the unemployment rate -- are rising."
