Village IronKids instills a healthy lifestyle at an early age
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Village Health Clubs and Spas are helping parents and children to make physical activity a part of a child's life. The newest and most fun program for kids is the six week triathlon program, called Village IronKids, which prepares kids ages 7-10 to compete in the IronKids Triathlon in Tempe, AZ on November 18. Each week, the group will get together and focus on fun, easy to do activities such as swimming, biking to the park, taking a short run at the park, and riding their bikes back to the Club. The training program will help kids focus their physical activities on a goal; finishing the race with other kids and having fun doing it.
"We have an adult Village Tri team, and many of the parents on the Tri team expressed interest in having the same thing for their children", says Abby Forsberg, triathlon coordinator for Village Health Clubs. "The Village IronKids program helps children with their physical abilities, as well as their mental and social skills. Training for a triathlon instills a physical lifestyle at an early age, which has become very important in today's sedentary video-playing younger set."
According to the Department of Nutrition Therapy at the Cleveland Clinic, one out of every five children in the US is overweight, and this number is continuing to grow. Overweight children are at high risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults, placing them at risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes later in life. They are also more prone to develop stress, sadness and low self-esteem.
