Vikings Wide Receiver Bernard Berrian Pledges Up to $10,000 to Second Harvest Heartland; Challenges the Community and Fellow Vikings to Help Feed the Hungry This Holiday Season
Date:11/24/2008

SAINT PAUL, Minn., Nov. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian today pledged to donate up to $10,000 to Second Harvest Heartland, Minnesota's largest hunger-relief organization, to provide turkeys to hungry inner-city families this holiday season. The pledge, which included a community and Vikings team challenge, was announced at a news conference at NorthPoint Health & Wellness Inc. in Minneapolis, a health and human services organization that serves residents of North Minneapolis, an area that has been hit particularly hard this year by foreclosures and the economic downturn.

As part of his pledge, Berrian is donating $5,000 to Second Harvest Heartland to provide turkeys to local inner-city families for Thanksgiving. He will match all community and team donations up to an additional $5,000 to provide turkeys for local inner-city families for Christmas. Berrian's $10,000 pledge will provide 1,000 turkeys for those in need. Following his announcement, Berrian personally handed out 20 turkeys to NorthPoint Health & Wellness Inc. clients.

Berrian is only in his first year with the Minnesota Vikings yet is eager to make a difference for those in need in the community. "I'm new to town but want to express my deep appreciation for the support shown by Vikings fans. I realize there is a great need for help in our community right now because of the economy, and people are really hurting," said Berrian, who had a modest upbringing outside of Fresno, Calif. "But we can help. That's why I'm challenging my fellow Vikings teammates and all Twin Citians to join me in helping to end hunger this holiday season."

"We are incredibly grateful for Bernard's generosity," said Rob Zeaske, executive director of Second Harvest Heartland. "His gift to inner-city families is a blessing for many who are struggling to make ends meet this holiday season and proves that one person really can make a dif
